Joan Dwiartanto
Performing Artist
Joan Dwiartanto (she/her) is a multifaceted artist whose practice spans the disciplines of dance, film, and photography. Her pre-professional dance training began at the School of the Arts, Singapore, before she moved to New York to continue her training at The Juilliard School (Class of 2022). While at Juilliard, she performed the works by renowned choreographers including Aszure Barton, Ohad Naharin, Justin Peck, Or Schraiber, and Bobbi Jene Smith.
Since graduating, Dwiartanto has been establishing herself in the New York contemporary dance scene. As a member of Yue Yin Dance Company (YYDC), she has been in the world premieres of Yue Yin’s acclaimed trilogy: NOWHERE (2023), SOMEWHERE (2024), and ELSEWHERE (2025). Her versatility as a performer has led to engagements with major institutions across the United States, serving as a 'Swing' for Hubbard Street Dance Chicago (2024–25 season) and appearing as a guest artist with Gibney Dance Company in Johan Inger’s BLISS. Her New York credits also include performances with Tethered Residents and (All)ways Dance Company.
Parallel to her performance career, Dwiartanto is an award-winning filmmaker and director. Her directorial debut, Crying On The Island They Own (2022), earned twelve official festival selections and garnered top honors, including ‘Best Film’ at the Saint Petersburg International Film Festival and the ‘Grand Jury Bluebonnet Award’ at the Austin Dance Film Festival. Her previous film credits include co-directing a film commissioned for the Park Avenue Armory’s 100 Years | 100 Women event and serving as the creative videographer for James Whiteside’s Marilyn’s Funeral.
A recent recipient of the Gold Standard Arts Foundation Commission Dreamer Award, Dwiartanto continues to explore the intersection of movement and film.
